Detectives are appealing for information to identify a group of men who robbed a 70-year-old man in Birkenhead last night, Friday 12 July.
At around 9.15pm, the victim walked to McColls on Laird Street and saw a group of people consisting of four men and two women sitting on the wall of the nearby bus depot.
He left the shop a short time later, and walked up the alleyway opposite Laird Street Baptist Church. The victim then became aware that he was being followed by three men from this group. One of the men put his arm around the victim’s neck from behind and dragged him backwards, before stealing his wallet. The group went back in the direction of the bus depot and the victim returned home and called police.
The main suspect is described as white, late 30s-40s, wearing a grey tracksuit with hooded top, and black trainers.
Extensive CCTV and witness enquiries are underway.
Detective Inspector Paul Parry said: “I’m sure those in the Birkenhead community will share our complete disgust at this incident, in which a gentleman simply visiting his local shop was set upon by this group of adults. He is understandably distressed and is being supported by officers as we look to find those involved.
“We are exploring all forensic and CCTV opportunities but I also want to appeal to anyone in the area last night who saw this group hanging around or had any interaction with them. Likewise, anyone who has heard local talk is urged to come forward.
“I would also like to ask anyone who is considering whether to come forward this question: what would you think if your grandfather, family member or friend was robbed in such a terrifying way? You would expect those responsible to be dealt with swiftly and strongly. We will act on all information to deal with those who think it is acceptable to frighten and steal from an innocent member of our community.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact @MerPolCC, call 101 with reference 1032 of 12 July or via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, which is independent of police.
